On behalf of the newly elected Board of Officers and Directors, I want to take this occasion to express to each and every one of you how proud we are to have been given this opportunity to lead our local League over the next year. Each of us cares deeply about the League, and we look forward to supporting you, the members, and to serving our North and Central San Mateo County communities.
Relying on your feedback and suggestions, the Board has begun planning what we believe to be an interesting, informative and a relevant program for the upcoming 2008- 2009 League Year. You can expect meetings that will enlighten, be fun, and feature exciting guest speakers. You can look for more partnerships with other community service organizations, as well as the exploration of new opportunities, like the facilitation of association elections, and more!
Whether you're interested in fostering education in citizenship, helping voters understand the ballot measures and/or where the candidates stand on the issues; whether you're interested in promoting civic reforms via participation in public forums and discussions on such topics as transportation, energy, water, health care, and housing, or perhaps want to help support civic participation for needed legislation to reform redistricting, elections, and campaign finance, I hope you feel you can look to the League as a reliable source for the latest information on these topics, as well as an organization you can trust to provide you with the appropriate support to enable action.
There is probably no other national volunteer organization in America that inspires such a great degree of commitment from its members. As a direct result of that commitment, the League of Women Voters has evolved from what it was in 1920 -- a "mighty political experiment" designed to help 20 million enfranchised women carry out their new responsibilities-- to what it is today-- a unique, nonpartisan organization that is a recognized force in molding political leaders, shaping public policy and promoting informed citizen participation at all levels of government.
I invite you to become an active part of today's League network and help to build the League of tomorrow. We encourage and welcome your interest, involvement and support!
